TENNESSEE POLITICS

WHAT’S CHANGING

THE FORCES RESHAPING TENNESSEE.

Tennessee isn’t the state it was ten years ago. Population growth, migration, redistricting, and shifting issue priorities are rewriting the political map.

URBAN VS. RURAL DIVIDE
Nashville, Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga are growing bluer while rural Tennessee stays deep red. The suburbs are the battleground that decides statewide races.
POPULATION MIGRATION
Tens of thousands moving in from California, New York, and Illinois every year. New residents are reshaping voter demographics in Williamson, Rutherford, and Davidson counties.
REDISTRICTING IMPACT
New district maps changed the math. Some traditionally safe seats are now more competitive, and some competitive seats have been locked down.
EDUCATION POLITICS
School choice, vouchers, and teacher pay have become top-tier issues. Education policy drives primary and general election campaigns across the state.
HEALTHCARE GAP
Tennessee’s refusal to expand Medicaid remains a wedge issue. Rural hospital closures keep healthcare in the headlines and on the ballot.
ECONOMIC GROWTH
No state income tax, business-friendly policy, major corporate relocations. But housing costs and infrastructure strain are creating new political pressure points.
THREE GRAND DIVISIONS

WEST. MIDDLE. EAST.

Tennessee is three states in one. Understanding the politics of each grand division is the difference between winning and wasting money.

WEST TENNESSEE
Memphis metro, Jackson, and the rural delta counties. The most diverse region in the state with distinct political patterns and cultural identity.
MIDDLE TENNESSEE
Nashville metro. The fastest-growing region. Williamson County is the wealthiest, Davidson the most urban, Rutherford the swing. This is where statewide races are decided.
EAST TENNESSEE
Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Appalachian communities. Historically the most Republican region with deep conservative roots and strong turnout patterns.
POLITICAL DATA SNAPSHOT

THE NUMBERS BEHIND
THE MAP.

Long Drive Strategy conducts independent polling and tracks political data across all 95 Tennessee counties. Here’s what the data tells us right now.

4.8M
REGISTERED VOTERS
Tennessee has 4.8 million registered voters across 95 counties, but turnout in non-presidential years drops below 35% in most districts. Making targeted mobilization the deciding factor.
62%
SUBURBAN GROWTH RATE
Nashville’s suburban ring (Williamson, Rutherford, Wilson, Sumner) has grown 62% faster than the state average since 2020. These are the swing precincts that decide statewide races.
3
DISTINCT ELECTORATES
East Tennessee is Appalachian conservative. Middle Tennessee is suburban swing. West Tennessee is Delta Democrat. Statewide strategy that treats Tennessee as one electorate loses.
KEY BATTLEGROUNDS

WHERE RACES ARE WON
AND LOST.

Our polling identifies the districts and demographics where campaigns have room to move numbers. These are the fault lines we watch.

NASHVILLE SUBURBS
Williamson and Rutherford counties are shifting. College-educated suburban voters are splitting tickets at higher rates than any other demographic in the state. Candidates who win these precincts win statewide.
HAMILTON COUNTY CORRIDOR
Chattanooga’s growth is creating a second suburban battleground in East Tennessee. Tech migration and university expansion are reshaping the electorate faster than either party has adjusted.
SHELBY COUNTY TURNOUT
Memphis turnout variance between presidential and off-year cycles is the largest in the state. A 5-point turnout increase in Shelby County can swing three state legislative seats.
RURAL CROSSOVER DISTRICTS
Seven rural districts have voted for candidates of both parties in the last three cycles. These are persuasion districts where targeted messaging and field operations decide outcomes.
